Fusion wear ideas – Funky traditional clothes for Diwali!
Continuing my series of Festive fusion wear ideas of Indo-western Navratri Outfits that I have been flooding you with, I am bring one more series. Festival fashion this year is all about experimenting looks, fusion wear and a mix of contemporary with traditional. For those who are new to this term, fusion wear means wearing your western outfits with traditional ones and creating festive fusion looks. Like pairing your denim jeans with ethnic dupatta, traditional skirt with a crop top or traditional dress with a denim jacket. It means a fusion of two cultures where contemporary meets traditional and makes you look trendy yet ethnic.
Most of the time we prefer wearing traditional dress for Diwali, however times are changing and its time to incorporate sustainability in our lifestyle. Buying new clothes for Diwali is a lovely tradition, but for those who want to repeat clothes you can always restyle your old ones. If you are wondering You have come to right place. I am all for repeating old clothes and restyling them in new ways. Here is a way you can create fusion wear from your existing wardrobe to create beautiful festival looks.
Western Gown to Indo-western Diwali outfit
Remember that ethereal white Gown you got for your wedding or the one that you donned for romantic valentine’s dinner? In Indian setting with festivals always on the corner, how to your multipurpose your western gowns that you hardly get to wear otherwise. For me, Gowns have always been something that has put me at unease when it came to rewearing them at functions. I did not want to look out of place as well as I don’t want to look like I am dressed for a wrong occasion. But the current fusion fashion trend has put me much at ease when experimental Indo-western looks are considered. All I have to do is ethnize my Westerns to create beautiful fusion fashion looks.
White gown into Ethnic wear
This was a plain western gown, untill I decided to put an embroidered patchwork on it and style it with this pompom belt. There are many mirrorwork and embroidered belts available in the market that you can use. I completed my look with ethnic jewellery like afghan earrings and maang tikka. A sublte makeup to balance the overpowering look and I am ready to rock this fusion lehenga from the gown.

Another way is to don a ethnic gujarati vest over your white gown to give it the required traditional vibe. You can also go ahead and pair it with a bandhani dupatta. Make a shrug from your dupatta as I have always shown on my Insta stories and wear it with your White gown to create an Indo-western outfit.

In order to make such dupatta shrug, you need to join both the corners with the center of dupatta and knot it up. Bring the knot at your back and enter your arms in the arm holes created on both sides of the knot, and Voila. Your home made dupatta shrug is ready.

You can just drape your dupatta over your gown if its an A-line plain gown.
Western Skirts for Lehenga
These days lots of designers are heading towards western silhouettes like tapered hems, uneven hemlines, structured skirts and crop tops. A great way to create a fusion outfit for Diwali party or festival would be to mix up the ethnic materials with Western cuts. For example you can use a western skirt with your choli or a crop top with your ghagra to create a completely new fusion lehenga. I have an uneven skirt with me that I used here to create a white lehenga. I paired this skirt with one of my saree blouse its one of those ready made choli blouse you get in the market that you can pair with many sarees. I completed the look with a matching white dupatta and accessories to create an ethnic lehenga from a western skirt.

Another look is using one of my structured skirts from a wedding saree gown that I used to create a more traditional lehenga style. Saree gowns are apt for functions where you are going to adorn the centre stage as it lets you be unique and stand out from others. But when attending an event as a guest it slightly becomes OTT at times. These times you can use the skirt from the saree gown, pair it with a crop top or a plain t-shirt or a spagetti and complete the look with an ethnic jacket.

Here I have done exactly that. I have used my mirror work embroidered jacket and a single shoulder crop top from Shein with this structured skirt to create a beautiful ethnic lehenga apt for Diwali or any traditional function.

I have accessorized this look with lots of oxidized jewelry and beautiful elehpant latkans. The multicoloured ethnic vest or Rajasthani jacket gives a vibrant look to the white lehenga.
Scarf as Saree Blouse
Are you thinking to wear your Mom’s saree next Diwali but confused as to how to revamp it without going overboard in the styling department? A good way to start would be to pair a random blouse. Yes you have heard this word earlier as many of my saree blogger friends have now decided to wear their sarees with different blouses. From crop tops to slips, to kurtas and even scarves! Yes a scarf. Here I have used a scarf or a wrap around skirt to make an halter-neck blouse for a plain blue saree of my mom’s. A different drape can make a dupatta into an off-shoulder saree blouse and your new fusion outfit is created in a jiffy.

Dupatta as ethnic pleated skirt
This one I have posted earlier in my last year’s Diwali outfit ideas and that time Fusion fashion word was not even thought of. What I want to tell you guys is these fancy words are just coined these days but we all have been doing these mix and match styles since ages. Coming back to the look, this is a silk dupatta or even saree can be used, draped in pleats around a plain skirt or petticoat to give a silk pleated skirt look. This skirt then can be paired with a crop top, a shirt or your favorite ethnic tunic or short kurta and you are ready for next Diwali party.

Dhoti pants have been trending a lot these days. But what if you don’t own one, neither want to invest in one? Well no worries, we have the dupatta in dhoti drape that will help you carry your dhoti pants effortlessly this Diwali. Dhoti drape is famous even in sarees, but dhoti drape in dupatta gets a little bit tricky. I have draped this embroidered dupatta here in Dhoti style in the below pic and I have posted a video of this drape on my Instagram as well as Youtube channel if you ever want to try this drape.
