How many times have you picked up a sexy outfit and put it right back because you don’t know what bra to wear with it? How many times have you been consciously or unconsciously adjusting your undergarments during an event as you do not feel comfortable from inside? Been there done that! Trust me; I myself had been struggling with understanding Lingerie for so long. Till the time I got pregnant and in my bid to understand about different maternity Bras and Nursing Bras, I actually researched on this topic and came across different Bra types and their uses. I came to know how wrong I was when I bought just one or two types of lingerie and considered myself done.

Did you know there are almost 20 different Bra types and almost 10 underwear types? That Lingerie is very different from just bras or matching bra underwear set is just one type of lingerie? There are different types of lingerie ranging from sexy lace to some utility based ones. But on that later, today I want to share something that every girl should know – Different Bra types and with what to pair them! Now that I know more about these intimate essentials that make or break a look, I would like to shed some light on this.
T-shirt Bra
T-shirt Bra is the one of the most essential part of your lingerie collection. If you ask which type of bra is best for everyday wear, I will say a T-shirt Bra. It’s a padded bra with seamless smooth cups that are perfect for body hugging outfits. T-shirt bras come in breathable cotton material and are always padded. There are both wired and non-wired types of these bras, select depending on your requirement. You can stock up on 4-6 t-shirt bras in different colors to be paired with most of your outfits including Indian and western. Prefer a Nude shade similar to your skin tone to go under all colours, even white during summers, to avoid peeping tom! T-shirt bra can be worn by women of almost all sizes. Just make sure you know your bra size well.
Push-up Bra
Push-up Bra exactly does what it names tells. If you are petite like me and want to make your bust fuller, push up bra is a great option. They have an additional padding at the bottom of the cups that push your bra together to give you a fuller bust and a prominent cleavage. For those who already are endowed with fuller bust could do away without this type of Bra. Yet again if you want to look a tad bit sexy in that V-neck Blouse or a body hugging date night outfit then, nothing like a push-up bra! Most push-up bras are wired and some are non-wired types too. I personally feel this is the perfect bra post pregnancy, when you want your almost saggy breast from nursing to come back into their original shape.
Strapless Bra
A strapless Bra is must for outfits revealing your shoulders like off-shoulder dress or halter tops. If you are wondering about the comfort factor; let me tell you, if bought thoughtfully, a Strapless Bra can also be super comfortable. Always look for details like gel strips, internal padding, under-wired support and broad side and back for the bra to stay in place and not slip down. Most important thing is to buy the right size of bra. Having one strapless Bra in your lingerie drawer is totally a Must.
Bandeau Bra
Bandeau Bra is somewhere between a strapless Bra and a tube top! It doesn’t have padding or wire but is rather super stretchable bra with delicate material that is super comfortable and great for beach wear. You can wear this under your sarongs or see-through tops. Prefer bright colour that will give great contrast to your summer looks.
Demi Bra
Depending upon the shape of your breast different types of bra cups are available in the market. The Demi bra cups are not completely covered and top 1/4th part is cut out to expose the upper portion of your breasts. If you love wearing deep neck or broad neck outfits, Demi Bra is your must have lingerie item. These bras come with wide shoulder straps to create a squarish look. When it comes to different types of bra for different outfits, Demi Bra is best suited for broad neck or square neck outfits, especially the deep cut Punjabi suits. It can be worn by all body types.
Balconette Bra
Balconette Bras are the more revealing version of Demi Bras. With almost half the cups cut-out and widely spaced straps, they literally give balcony like appearance. It gives dramatic lift to your bust and is quite revealing. Balconette bras can be an asset to your intimate essentials as they come in really cute prints are look totally sexy. These bras are great for medium to small bust size. They can go unseen with even the widest of necklines.
Plunge Bra
This Bra comes with a Plunge neckline and is great to wear with deep neck outfits or plunge neck dresses. They come with a deep plunge in the center and cut out cups on each sides to give a fuller appearance to the bust.
Minimizer Bra
Contrary to the push up bra, minimizer bra does exactly the opposite. If you are generously endowed and want to reduce the appearance of larger bust under fitted outfits, Minimizer bras are just for you. These bras are created to visually reduce the circumference of chest with full coverage and an equal redistribution of breasts. Minimizer bras create an appearance of smaller bust.
Sports Bra
When working out, wear the right Bra- Sports Bra. It’s the perfect bra to give required comfort and support while you are exercising. They not only keep the breasts in place but also provide great support and avoid them from sagging due to all the pull and push while you are working out.
Convertible Bra
Of all the different types of Bras, the convertible Bras are the most utilitarian. They are literally 4 bras in one! With the modifiable straps that can be changed into halter, strapless, racer-back or single shoulder, these bras are the super versatile Bras. One convertible Bra in neutral colour is a must buy.
Backless Bra
There are different types of Bras for different occasions. And depending upon the outfit you are donning, you need to select your lingerie or inner wear. While wearing backless gowns or risqué clothes with deeper backs, a Backless bra with transparent back strap can be your go to. They are one of the fashion essential lingerie if you are going to wear backless choli or sheer back blouses. Choose your backless bra wisely and opt for a good fitting, completely transparent back strap bra. There are different transparency levels of the straps available in the market so pick wisely. Another option to backless bra would be the silicone sticky pads.
